What a religious holiday today
January 26 in the church calendar is the day of memory of Saints Xenophon and Mary. Xenophon and Maria were a couple from Byzantium who lived in the 5th century and were famous for their piety and charity. They had two sons, Arcadius and John, who also became saints. They belonged to a noble family and had a lot of property, but they were not attached to earthly goods and distributed them to the poor and churches.
Once the sons sailed to another city to study on a ship and got caught in a strong storm. They escaped, but ended up on different shores. Considering each other as dead, they entered the monasteries, where they gave themselves to God. The parents, having learned about the shipwreck, also thought that their sons had drowned. They went on farewell to Jerusalem, where they met their children, who also arrived in the city. After the joyful meeting, the sons went to the desert, and the parents gave away all their property and entered the monasteries.
