History of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God

The Iveron Icon of the Mother of God is one of the most revered images of the Mother of God in Orthodoxy. Legend has it that the image was painted by the Evangelist Luke during the life of the Mother of God. In the 8th century it was moved to Iveron Monastery on Mount Athos (Holy Mountain).

The icon got its name from the place where it was located – Iversky Monastery. According to legend, she was miraculously saved from the fire when one of the monks saw the Virgin Mary standing in front of her, protecting her from the fire.

The meaning of the image Iveron

Icon Iveron is considered miraculous; he was glorified by many healings and miracles. Believers turn to her with prayers for help in various life situations: for health, protection from enemies, deliverance from troubles.

Celebration traditions

On the Iveron Day of the Image of the Mother of God it is usual:

visit the temple: on this day, believers try to visit the temple and pray in front of the Iveron Icon;

pray: prayers in front of the image are read with special reverence, with faith in its miraculous power;

bring flowers: in churches it is customary to decorate the image of Iveron with flowers.

Weather: if the day is sunny – the winter will be cold and frosty, cloudy, rainy – the winter will be warm, and it will often melt. Snow falls on this day leaving a hard and snowy winter. If it is windy on the Iveron Statue, it means a cold winter.

Home: it was impossible to start any important work on Icon Iveron, especially related to construction or repair. If you go to church on this day and light a candle in front of the Icon Icon, this will protect the house from troubles and misfortunes. If a girl on this day prayed to the Mother of God in front of the Icon Icon for a good groom, her request will certainly be heard.
