Davis Cup, the official announcement arrives: Italy is involved. The news bodes well for the fans, what a joy
The disappointment for the elimination in the semifinal of Davis Cup it is still burning in Italy, with the Azzurri having succumbed to Canada after the initial advantage in the first singles. No final, therefore, despite Berrettini’s descent into the field engaged in the doubles together with Fognini, called to play for theinjury to Simone Bolelli.
After Sonego’s success (7-6, 6-7, 6-4), the defeat of Musetti against Auger-Aliassime (3-6, 4-6) and that of Fognini-Berrettini duo against Pospisil and Auger-Aliassime himself (6-7, 5-7). We recall, however, that Volandri had to do without the best blue in the ATP Ranking, the number 15 Jannik Sinner injured and Berrettini himself was not in the best of condition.
The appointment with bringing the trophy won in 1976 it was postponed again, and even today the one won by Adriano Panatta, Corrado Barazzutti, Paolo Bertolucci and Tonino Zugarelli remains the only Davis Cup won by the Azzurri.
After the United States defeated in the quarterfinals, therefore, the blue adventure in Malaga stopped in the semifinals and it is now time to think about the 2023when – with a little more luck and fewer injuries – Italy will again be able to aim for the big target.
Meanwhile, just in view of 2023, one good news for Italy. The Azzurri, as announced by the Federation, have in fact received a joker card for the next edition; this means that the selection will not have to play in the preliminary rounds in February but will take the field directly in the group stage which will start in Bologna on 11 September.
Davis Cup, not just Italy: who will have the wild card
Like Italy, Spain also received the wild card; for the final phase, however, Canada and Australia, the two finalists of this edition, qualified by right.
The other selections that played in the final phase of the 2022 edition of the Davis Cup, however, will face the 12 national teams that won the World Group I playoffs. The top 12 seeds are the USA, Croatia, Germany, Serbia, Belgium, Holland, Argentina, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Kazakhstan, France and Great Britain.
The 12 unseeded internationalsinstead, they will be Austria, Finland, Colombia, South Korea, Hungary, Slovakia, Chile, Switzerland, Portugal, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Portugal and Uzbekistan.
