Sinner, the runner-up in the final ATP tournament, defeated his counterpart Talon Griegspoor 7-6 (3/7) and 6-1 to equalize the score in the confrontation between the two teams after the Dutchman, Boutique van de Zandschulp, had defeated Matteo Arnaldi in the first singles match.
However, Sinner and his compatriot Lorenzo Sonego defeated Grieskboer and Wilsie Kohlhoff in the doubles match 6-3, 6-4, to lead Italy to the semi-finals for the second year in a row.
Sinner said, “We were under a lot of pressure and we started as the underdogs in the decisive doubles match, but it was a pleasure to play with (Sonego). We have a great team.”
The Netherlands, which reached the quarter-finals for the last time in 2001, have not defeated Italy in 100 years, having lost the previous seven matches against Italy.
Serbia, led by superstar Novak Djokovic, will face Britain later, where the winner between them will play against Italy in the second semi-final.
The first confrontation in the quarter-finals brings together Australia with Finland, the surprise of the current version, on Friday.
