David Villa to build New York’s first soccer-only stadium

Queensboro FC presents its stadium project. The United Soccer League (USL) club, whose debut in the competition will take place in the 2022 season and one of whose owners is David Villa, will play its home games at New York University’s York College, where it will have a stadium built especially for soccer.

In the summer of 2020, the university signed an agreement with the club club to build and manage a stadium on the York College campus, as part of its project to support the academic and athletic mission of the university, as well as enhance the university experience for its students, create local jobs, and develop the surrounding area.

As part of the strategic alliance with the university, they will develop a curriculum that will address subjects such as health, wellness and sports education, which will include the Queensboro FC staff, including the technical staff and footballers.

The stadium, with a modular structure, will have capacity for up to 7,500 spectators. The project has been commissioned to the architecture office Populous, the company responsible for the construction of such important venues as Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“Presenting this stadium is a very important step for our project,” says David Villa. “Our dream of building a path for young footballers in Queens and across New York to become professionals is much closer now,” he says. “The experience of creating a club from scratch is not easy, but it is a wonderful challenge and so far we are very happy with how everything is going,” he says.

The former footballer retired as a professional at the end of 2019, and shortly before announced his entry into the project, as one of the reference shareholders of Queensboro FC. The team was founded by the investment group led by New York businessman Jonathan Krane, CEO of asset management company KraneShares. “I lived and played in New York for four years (from 2015 to 2018) while developing my soccer academies; I know how special Queens is, I could not choose a better location, “he said then about the project.
