David Schumacher and Mercedes-AMG are separating

David Schumacher will no longer compete for Mercedes-AMG in 2025. After three years together, the collaboration between the brand with the star and the son of the former Formula 1 and DTM driver Ralf Schumacher is ending. It was initially unknown what the future of motorsports held for David. He should have offers from other manufacturers.

From the end of the collaboration Motorsport-Magazin.com exclusively found out this Wednesday, on Schumacher’s 23rd birthday of all days. Most recently he was employed as an AMG junior at Mercedes. The next step should have been to become a so-called performance driver, similar to drivers like Maro Engel or Lucas Auer. That doesn’t happen anymore.

Ralf Schumacher: “David has very interesting offers”

“We now want to take the next step in David’s racing career because he has clearly shown a very positive motorsport development,” says Ralf Schumacher when asked by Motorsport-Magazin.com. “David has received very interesting offers, which, however, require a change of brand. That’s why he will no longer compete for Mercedes-AMG in the future.”

Meanwhile, Mercedes-AMG informed us when asked Motorsport-Magazin.com with: “We are not informed that David will definitely not drive for Mercedes-AMG in 2025.”

David Schumacher’s conclusion: “The year had ups and downs”

After two DTM seasons, Schumacher started in the ADAC GT Masters for the first time this year, where he shared a Mercedes-AMG GT3 with teammate and defending champion Salman Owega. In the vehicle used by HRT, Schumacher and Owega took third place in the championship. They were 79 points behind the newly crowned champions Tom Calendar/Elias Seppänen (Landgraf-Mercedes).

At the GT Masters finale at the Hockenheimring as part of the DTM, Schumacher/Owega won the Saturday race and celebrated their third victory of the season. The HRT duo had previously achieved a double victory at the race weekend at the Nürburgring. Schumacher and Owega were on the podium a total of five times and started from pole position twice.

“The year had ups and downs,” said Schumacher after the season finale. “We would have liked to have had more weekends like the one at the Nürburgring and joined the fight for the championship, but it wasn’t quite enough.” Teammate Owega said: “Third place is a good result, but David and I didn’t quite live up to our expectations.”

Schumacher rules out return to formula racing

David Schumacher had his share of sporting headlines this year together with dad Ralf at the Nürburgring. The father-son team fulfilled a dream by starting as a guest in the Prototype Cup Germany – and put it into practice with great success: Schumacher/Schumacher captured both pole positions and two race victories in the LMP3 prototype.

At that time, Schumacher, who made his DTM debut at Winward-Mercedes in 2022, had ruled out a return to single-seater racing. “The formula thing is over,” he said Motorsport-Magazin.com. “I wouldn’t want to go back to formula racing anymore. The Formula 2 issue is so much politics now and the engines sometimes have a difference of 20 or 30 hp. I don’t want to go through that anymore.”
