At just 20 years old, David Okit amazes with his maturity. Passionate about music from an early age, this singer embarked on rap with texts full of the pangs and traps of his generation, success in the key. In 2020, however, he took a radical turn after his conversion.
At 8, David Okitakula left Brussels for Kinshasa (DRC), before returning there at the age of 16. Heckled life, divorced parents, music will be her comfort and her first salvation. It was at 18 that he released his first track and made his first visit to Skyrock, before being invited on stage by Bigflo and Oli. Alcohol, women, violence and delinquency are his sources of inspiration and his daily lot; rap, obvious. Until an incredible turnaround: his encounter with Christ.
From hate to love: a life given for Christ
Nothing forced him to change his mind. His rap was working well, his talent met his audience. A career opened in front of him with an audience thirsty for violence. It was his pain that made him decide to change and open up to God’s love in 2020. And his stage name, David Okit, is now visually decked out with the cross of Christ on the “T” of her last name. The tone is set and his choice is irreversible. The young man really fell in love with the One who saved Him. From now on, his texts are very inspired by his Protestant faith.
His rap has become softer, more melodious too, sometimes bordering on Afropop or indie rock. “I have decided to dedicate my art to God” he sings in It will be fine, one of the hundred titles produced in just two months on SoundCloud in November and December 2020, to mark the occasion of his change of life. In a few months, it has accumulated nearly 8 million downloads. “And even my scars Jesus made them pretty” (Mad about god); “I am very talented but without Him the inspiration would be limited” (Chela); “My goal is to be like Christ” (Melo-J); his songs are all punctuated with a testimony of faith and a homage to Christ. We discover in particular that he could have fallen into delinquency or drug dealer.
A first clip shot in a church
David Okit addresses all the young people of his generation, but not only. His testimony can speak to all who need to stand up and see themselves through God’s eyes. Barely out of childhood, he hits the mark, in the heart and in the mind, because he testifies to his personal experience between the prodigal son and a young Zacchaeus determined not to bet all his life on the silver.
And his talent seems to have multiplied since he offered it to God. His first clip for the title Igo produced by Polydor, released on January 15, was filmed in a church. Nothing less astonishing. He sings there surrounded by gospel singers: “since I met Jesus, I have found my balance”, “I make music for Christ”. Even rappers have something to open us up to grace.
