David McCallum: Remembering the Legacy of the Beloved Actor

According to him, David McCallum died of natural causes at New York Presbyterian Hospital surrounded by his family.

“He was the kindest, most brilliant, most patient and loving father,” he wrote according to CNN his son. “He always put his family before himself.”

David McCallum was born in 1933 in Glasgow, Scotland, into a family of musicians. His father was a respected violinist who won an engagement with London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and his mother a cellist.

He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, worked on the radio and in various theater groups, but also devoted himself to music – he played the oboe.

In 1961, David McCallum moved to the United States, where he became famous for the role of agent Ilya Kuryakin (in the English original Illya Kuryakin) in the television spy series “The Man From UNCLE”. The role earned him a Golden Globe nomination and two Emmy Awards.

But Czech viewers know him above all as the eccentric pathologist Donald “Ducky” Mallard in the “endless” series Naval Investigative Service (NCIS). He trained for the role with a real coroner. His son even said of him that he could perform an autopsy himself if needed.

In the 1990s, he appeared in minor roles in the TV series Law & Order and Sex and the City. In 2009, the actor appeared in Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot and became the voice of Alfred Pennyworth in the animated superhero film Batman Vs. Robin from 2015.

David Mc Callum was married twice, had a total of five children, one of whom was adopted and died of a drug overdose.
