David Leitch Honors Stuntmen in New Film Stuntman: A Action-Romantic Comedy

It’s a dirty job. You explode, shoot, fall, and you are never seen on the screen. The director of the film Kaskadér, which is now shown in Czech cinemas, experienced this profession firsthand. In the new action-romantic comedy, David Leitch honors the craft he started in Hollywood.

He used to jump in for Brad Pitt, then the first time John Wick ten years ago he showed that he understands the genre behind the camera as well. After more pictures of excellent imaginary events including Atomic Blonde or last year Bullet Train is David Leitch coming back in a way in the movie Stuntman.

Not that he himself would be controlling a car, which is going to make eight attempts in the air before it explodes. But he put an actor behind the wheel Ryan Goslingwhich shows that even stuntmen can have a starring role.

Although not quite. The new film is a fun journey through the world in front of the camera and behind the camera, which is a bit like a sixteen year old watching action cinema. who made a romance. At the beginning, Gosling manages his love for the cinematographer of the film he is currently working on. However, the romance with Jody, played by the actress Emily Bluntsoon end the injury on a failed action trick.

And Colt Seavers – what else should be called a tough stuntman – will be separated from the world by explosions and would probably still be parking cars somewhere in a small bistro today, if not the producer of this project called him, when he really was. injured his back. Jody is making her directorial debut and is said to have specifically requested it.

As it turns out, things are a little more complicated. The disgraced former partner, whom Colt has not heard from in months, is not only unaware of his presence on the set. He has no idea that Colt has been given a slightly different job by the producer besides the stunts. To find the missing star Tom, that is, the man he was a double for six years before the accident.

In addition, Drew Pearce’s script continues as a dynamic game with several genres, where you don’t always have to guess why and how the plot unfolds.

The stunt is an over-the-top and over-the-top spectacle throughout, just look at the nature of the footage that Jody is shooting on the coast of Australia. It is supposed to be an amazing love story in the middle of the desert, where the western sun shines and monsters in funny rubber suits are made. At the same time, it’s immediately apparent that the photo will be partly a metaphor for Colt’s fragile relationship with Jody.

As Colt begins to investigate and finds himself involved in what appears to be lefto, the director David Leitch starts a double game with the viewer.

The biggest charm of The Stuntman comes from the fact that we are always on the edge of grotesque or almost parody, while the action scenes are real and amazing. Even the characters always go into the biggest clichés in their conversations, or have fun using anecdotes from famous movies from Rocky to Fast and Furious. Nevertheless, the creators manage not only to maintain tension, but also a romantic line of action.

Lizard-pawed actress Emily Blunt in the props room may look like she’s from a scrappy movie by American studio Troma, but when she’s thoughtfully scratching her forehead with a claw , despite all opinions, the scene reveals incredible emotions.

It is the same with the event, where we always feel the craftsmanship and hesitation to use digital tricks. On the other hand, it is extremely unusual. For example, when a drug-addled Colt wrestles opponents in a nightclub, his fists leave neon trails, and a few unicorns pass him by – acting like the normal thing.

A stuntman can easily and accurately appear as a combination of cuts from other films. However, the creators manage to get the sympathy of the audience, because Colt is just that, an imperfect and imperfect hero who belongs to a similar group.

Pulling tricks out of the hat without restraint, the film feels like a little sugar-addled boy has found access to a giant toy store where he can tinker with anything he wants. Not all toys and tricks are good, but they still work.

The stunt is based on the chemistry between the heroes and the clever mix of romance elements with action. And also on how much fun the filmmakers have, who don’t stop at quoting quotes from The Fast and the Furious. After the introduction, we soon see a car chase, which is an obvious homage the fifth of this series, in which the heroes drag a safe giant through the city on chains.

There are many cherry blossoms similar to the movie. In the end, however, the main currency of the Kaskadér is still a happy mix of different codes. A big explosion, the famous Sydney Opera House in the background, the ubiquitous golden decorations and so on.

The stuntman confidently straddles the line between opera and trash, blurring the distinctions between the two. And Ryan Gosling seems to be telling the audience and the American film academy that stuntmen deserve their Oscar box.
