Stranger Things star David Harbor has opened up about what happened when Hellboy bombed the box office.
Speaking to GQ, Harbor opened up about the experience of having his big screen debut as the titular demonic hero in 2019’s critically panned Hellboy. After the film’s release, Harbor reached out to Green Lantern star Ryan Reynolds for advice. Harbor said: “I know him a little bit. I called him up and said, ‘Hey, I just need to know something. Do you know Green Lantern? A great failure for you. How the hell is that, because I think I’m going to hit that right now. I’ll be fine? Will I survive this?’”

Harbor’s Hellboy was the second big screen adaptation of Mike Mignola’s popular comic book series of the same name. The film was originally planned as a sequel to 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army, starring Ron Perlman and directed by Guillermo del Toro, who returned after 2004’s Hellboy. After del Toro was not offered a spot to the possible third film, Perlman also dropped out, with the project being reworked into an R-rated reboot of the film franchise.
While the film itself was heavily panned, Harbor’s performance received mixed to positive reviews.
