David Hale Hand, the son of the director of the original Disney movie Snowwhite and the Seven Dwarfs from 1937, has criticized the forthcoming remake of the fairy tale.

According to Hand, his father David Dodd Hand and Walt Disney, the producer of the first film, would also have disagreed with the remake.

Hand does not agree with the new concept of the film. “They come up with new, woke things and I don’t like it. To be honest, I think it’s a bit insulting what they’ve done with those old classics,” he says in an interview with The Telegraph. “There’s no respect for what Walt Disney and my dad did. I think he and Walt would be turning in their graves.”

Actress Rachel Zegler, who plays the role of Snow White in the live action film, is also under fire on social media. She said she herself is not a fan of the original Disney animation. “The 1937 original is about a woman being stalked by a man, which is very strange.”

Zegler said that the remake is less about love and more about leadership. Many fans therefore accuse her of “pseudofeminism”. “Not every woman is a born leader or wants to be one,” says someone on TikTok. “Some women dream about a prince on a white horse. That fantasy should be respected just like dreams about leadership.”

The film Snow White is in cinemas in the United States from March 22, 2024. It is not yet known when the film will be released in the Netherlands.
