David Goffin and Andy Murray’s Wimbledon Losses: Roundup and Reactions

David Goffin lost to Russian Andrey Rublev in the third round. Public favorite Andy Murray was also unable to stunt against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

David Goffin (ATP 123) was unable to stunt in the third round of Wimbledon. He lost in four sets (3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (5-7) and 2-6) against Russian Andrey Rublev (ATP 7).

For a while it looked like Goffin would take a 2-1 lead. In the third set he quickly broke through Rublev’s service twice to lead 4-1. He gave up that lead completely and eventually lost in the tiebreak. In the fourth set, Goffin seemed unable to fight back.

Crowd favorite Murray out

We will also no longer see public favorite Andy Murray (ATP 40) in Wimbledon. He lost in the second round to the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 5) in five long sets (6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 6-7 (3-7) and 4-6).

On Thursday, the match was suspended after three sets because the curfew started ringing. All matches at Wimbledon must end at 11 p.m. local time. Murray was not happy with the decision as he felt he had gained momentum, leading 2-1. He may have been right, as he lost the next two sets.

“Obviously I’m very disappointed at the moment. Of course, you never know how many chances you’ll get to play here,” Murray told reporters.

“It’s never easy with Andy. Everyone loves him here,” Tsitsipas said after the game. “It was a very tough game and I am impressed with how well he is holding up after his hip surgery. It was nerve wracking.’

Tsitsipas plays in the third round against the Serbian Laslo Djere (ATP 60). The two have played against each other twice, twice the Greek came out on top.

The number 1 Carlos Alcaraz easily qualified for the third round. He won in three sets (6-4, 7-6 (7-2) and 6-3) against the Frenchman Alexandre Muller.
