David de Gea broke the record for most appearances by a goalkeeper in club history, surpassing Alex Stepney in Manchester United’s all-time appearance list.
Starting in the Premier League match against West Ham on Sunday evening (19:00 BST), De Gea played his 540th Manchester United game and established himself as a goalkeeper.
Spaniard David de Gea tied Stepney’s record for most appearances by a goalkeeper with 539 on Thursday at Brighton & Hove Albion. Steney, who won the European Cup with Manchester United in 1968, played for Old Trafford for 13 years from 1966 to 1979.
Stepney holds the record for the most league appearances by a Manchester United goalkeeper with 433, but De Gea is also set to challenge that record with his 411th Premier League appearance for United against West Ham.
Only six players across all positions have played: Ryan Giggs (963), Sir Bobby Charlton (758), Paul Scholes (718), Bill Folks (668), Gary Neville (602) and Wayne Rooney (559). He currently sits ahead of De Gea in United’s all-time appearance rankings.
David de Gea first joined Manchester United from Atlético Madrid in the summer of 2011 and has since been a mainstay of the team. He won the Premier League title in his second season and also won the FA Cup, Europa League, EFL Cup (twice) and Community Shield (three times).
The match against West Ham showed a disappointing performance, but De Gea is expected to finish the season with recognition for his personal performance in the 2022/23 season.
De Gea currently leads the Premier League Golden Glove rankings with 15 clean sheets in 34 league appearances so far this season. This is two more than Alisson (Liverpool) and Nick Pope (Newcastle), who recorded 13 side by side.
Congratulations on a fantastic achievement, David!
