MADRID, 18 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, will make a stop in the Falkland Islands this week on his planned trip to different South American countries, which represents the first visit by a cabinet minister since 2016.
This visit comes after the new president of Argentina, Javier Milei, put his country’s claim to the overseas territory back on the table by asking that the islands be handed over to Buenos Aires. In this regard, Cameron has already announced that his sovereignty is not subject to discussion, as reported by the Sky News channel.
“The Falkland Islands are a valuable part of the British family and we are clear that, as long as they want to remain part of the family, the issue of sovereignty will not be the subject of discussion,” he said in a statement before beginning his trip in the who added that “the inhabitants of the Falkland Islands should be proud of the modern and prosperous community they have built.”
The minister has also praised that “the islands have a prosperous economy, where in addition to agriculture and fishing, priority is given to conservation and sustainability.”
Cameron will meet Falkland Islands Government leaders during a visit to the capital, Stanley, and other locations around the overseas territory, including environmental projects and the habitats on which the island’s penguins depend.
He is expected to travel to the Falklands before visiting Paraguay, the first time a British Foreign Minister has traveled to the South American nation, the last stop before traveling to a meeting with his G20 counterparts in Brazil.
