David Cameron acknowledges mistakes in pressuring ministers to grant loans

LONDON, Apr 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Former British Prime Minister David Cameron acknowledged this Sunday that he “should have informed the Government” of his lobbying activities in which he would have tried to convince up to four ministers to grant emergency loans due to the pandemic.

Cameron has published a statement recognizing that there are “important lessons to be learned” from what happened.

The scandal came to light when it emerged that Cameron had contacted up to four ministers, including Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, to grant emergency loans to his boss, banker Lex Greensill.

In any case, Cameron emphasizes that he has not violated “any code of conduct or any government regulation” and has assured that his requests were not heard. “So I have complied with the rules and my interventions have not led to any change on the part of the Government,” he stressed.

Cameron acknowledges however that this does not change the fact that there are problematic issues. “As Prime Minister, I accept that communications with the Government should be carried out only through the most formal channels so that there is no possibility of misinterpretation,” he explained.

“I believed that the right thing to do was to represent a company that finances British companies. It was a time of crisis for the British economy, in which everyone was looking for effective ways to achieve liquidity for business,” he argued.
