In a new Netflix documentary, David Beckham tells what it’s like to live with OCD.
Former Manchester United and Real Madrid player David Beckham (47) suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder. An obsessive-compulsive disorder is characterized by recurring unpleasant and unwanted thoughts or compulsive actions.
In the documentary, Beckham says that he spends hours cleaning and organizing the home while the rest of the family have gone to bed.
– When everyone is in bed, I go around, clean the lights, set the lights to the right setting and make sure everything is tidy. I hate coming downstairs in the morning, also there are cups and plates. I know, it’s strange, he says according to the report The Guardian.
Beckham is clear that his cleaning routines are grueling, but he feels compelled to carry them out.
He has been open about his ailments on previous occasions as well. Way back in 2006, during an interview with ITV, he talked about how he can’t stop the compulsions, even though he’s tried.
– I have this obsessive compulsive disorder where I have to have everything in a straight line or everything has to be in pairs. I put my Pepsi cans in the fridge and if it’s one too many I put it in another cupboard somewhere. Everything has to be perfect, he said at the time.
