From the local press in 1978 to the renowned “Sports Illustrated” in 1979 and onto the big media stage: the third edition of the Ironman Hawaii also featured television for the first time. The report on the US broadcaster ABC brings the Ironman national attention. All of America is talking about the crazy people who walk these unbelievable distances in the 50th state of the USA. The race quickly finds imitators. After the first attempts at combined endurance formats in France and California, the sport is now getting a profile – and the name triathlon. 106 triathletes and two female triathletes compete in the third edition in Honolulu on the island of Oahu. It should be the last one at this location.
Dave Scott pulverizes course record
The third edition ends with the pulverization of the course record: The then 26-year-old swimming trainer Dave Scott from California finished almost two hours faster than last year’s winner. With his victory in 9:24:33 hours he has a lead of 1:08 hours on Chuck Neumann, five more titles are to follow. Robin Beck is the first woman to reach twelfth place in the overall ranking. A total of 95 of the 108 participants who started reach the finish
Moved to Washington – and Kailua-Kona
After this race, the Ironman founder and organizer Commander John Collins will be transferred from the Honolulu Navy to the capital Washington DC. The race will remain in Hawaii and will be entrusted to the owners of the Local Health Club. Because of the high traffic density around the Hawaiian capital Honolulu, they are looking for an alternative to the traditional routes of the Waikiki Roughwater Swim, the Round Oahu Cycle Race and the Honolulu Marathon – and they find it on another island: the youngest Hawaiian island, the Big Island with its wide lava fields and the coastal town of Kailua-Kona has been the venue of the race since 1981 (and to this day).
