Dave Roberts seems to be interviewing every year for the job he’s held for nine years, and that’s just what it’s like to be in the humbling position of being a head coach when that the Los Angeles Dodgers will not win the World Series. Although he holds the record for the highest winning percentage in more than 1,000 games, his contract is set to expire next year. If he doesn’t win two games in the National League Division Series against the doomed San Diego Padres, his job could be in jeopardy again.

The National League Championship Series appears to be a new interview test for Roberts. Here’s a reminder of a common interview question that some companies hire software developers:

Four people have to cross a bridge at night, some walking fast and some walking slowly. The problem is that there is only one flashlight and the bridge can only take two people at a time. How do we get everyone across the bridge safely as quickly as possible?

The answer is to let the two fastest people cross the bridge first, then let one of the faster people come back with a flashlight, and then let the two slowest people cross the bridge together. This is a question that tests efficiency.

Then there was Roberts’ National League Championship Series test:

Find a way to get the Dodgers over the bridge to the World Series. The challenge is that his starting pitchers have only pitched 20.1 total innings, which is an average of just 3.1 innings per game. He must use 28 pitches in six games and cannot lose a game with a lead.

Are you ready? Let’s get started!

Roberts did it.

Tommy Edman may have been the MVP of the National League Championship Series, and Shohei Ohtani may have hit the streak 17 times, but no one had a better performance in this series than Roberts.

Throughout the series, he has been talking about how he “needle a needle” with his kittens. Although Dodge’s strong offensive line scored a record 46 runs in the NL Championship Game, it let the game get out of hand twice by not using its best relievers. In the final Game 6, Roberts allowed his best pitcher, Blake Treinen, to complete the final six innings while resting, eventually winning 10-5 and helping the Dodgers to win their 22nd league championship in franchise history.

“You’ve got to do it,” Roberts said of pitching throughout the game. “I did that to prepare for six games, and when I looked back at Game 2 and then Game 5, I thought , ‘I don’t like this.'”

It will take a lot of discipline for Roberts to stick to his plan, especially as criticism grows that the Dodgers seem to have passed up a playoff game.

“It definitely takes (control),” Roberts said, “because even after the first few days of racing, I was under a lot of pressure people would say, ‘If you had a different strategy…’ But if I really If we did that and we lost the game, we wouldn’t be here today.”

Winning the National League Championship should have been a relief for Roberts, as he used an innovative strategy to get the win, and it worked perfectly. Before the Dodgers accomplished this, no one thought they could not bite a four-point deficit with many seats left in the playoffs.

“You know what? I try not to think about it like that,” said Roberts. “Honestly, sometimes you want to say, ‘Fuck you,’ to people who criticize you, but I stay humble and say to myself, ‘Stay humble’ because that’s me. So, I don’t want to be that kind of person.”

“People have a chance to get mad at me, and I understand that. But that’s not my style and I’m going to stay humble.”

The Dodgers are in the World Series because they have used bullpen tactics in three of their last eight games and have a 2-1 record with this dismal record.

Now Roberts must solve a similar interview puzzle again in the World Series against the New York Yankees. His current starting rotation includes Yushin Yamamoto, who hasn’t pitched more than five innings since June 7; Walker Buehler, who was exhausted after four innings in Game 3 of the NLCS in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series.
