Berlin/Weimar. Together with 16 sports clubs from all over Germany, the athletes from the Weimar section of the German Alpine Club experienced the awarding of the “Big Star of Sports” in gold at the Deutsche Zentral Bank in Berlin with their trainer Elisabeth Bock and their club chairman Frank Schwuntek. Since 2004, the DOSB, together with the Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken, has been looking for sports clubs with special social commitment. The event is the showcase for club sports and at the same time an opportunity to experience appreciation, hopes Katrin Müller-Hohenstein, who has been moderating this honor for years. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, DOSB President Thomas Weikert and Federal President of German Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken Marija Kolak were happy to take the opportunity to thank those responsible for the associations for their creativity and commitment as well as the regional VR banks for their support. Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated that “some people sit on the sofa and scold and other people take responsibility and ensure that something gets moving, something gets better – this part is here today”
What has the Weimar section of the German Alpine Club set in motion? The climbing hall in Weimar is open to everyone and the association therefore organized offers for people with disabilities a long time ago. With a taster session in climbing with the support of Special Olympics Thuringia and the Stadtsportbund Weimar, these efforts really picked up speed again. An inclusive climbing group was formed and the first Special Olympics climbing competition was organized, which was also the first in Germany. At the annual club competition for all age groups over two days, several Special Olympics athletes were able to prove their skills. Frank Schwuntek looks to the future when the Thuringian Winter Games of Special Olympics in Oberhof and Erfurt also have a competition venue in the climbing hall in Weimar at the beginning of March, it will be exciting again.
