THE HAGUE – The Hague guitarist Spike van Zoest and his fiancée Bella Hay have had a daughter. Lotus van Zoest was born prematurely and was born at the end of September after more than 32 weeks of pregnancy, Spike reports on Instagram. “In addition to being extremely proud, we are also a bit dazed by what has come at us,” he wrote on Sunday.

The girl was born on September 28 by emergency Caesarean section. “After a carefree pregnancy without too many ailments, the 28th of September unfortunately released Bella’s placenta,” writes the guitarist of DI-RECT. The couple was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where Lotus was born. “Lotus has done a fantastic job from there on: she was soon off the ventilator and IVs.”

Things weren’t going well for Bella. The daughter of Golden Earring singer Barry Hay was found to have high blood pressure and preeclampsia. ‘Physically it was hard for her, sitting up straight turned out to be too much the first week.’

Hold once a day
It was a rough start for the family. To limit the incentives for Lotus as much as possible, the new parents could only hold their child once a day. “In addition, I shuttled between two wards in the hospital, talking as much as possible to Lotus in her incubator and helping Bella eat,” Spike writes.
—
His girlfriend and daughter are now doing much better. ‘Lotus is off the monitor, Bella can walk again without assistance and best of all: we have a room in the hospital together where the three of us can stay until her discharge. For now she will be in the incubator for a while, but she is growing so fast that she will probably be able to go into a crib soon.’

‘Coming out in peace and health’
Spike and Bella are very proud and also stunned. ‘For now, the three of us hope to get through this period in peace and health.’ They thank all the HMC Westeinde staff who have assisted them in recent weeks. ‘It is really special to see how much love you are ready for someone else. As far as we’re concerned you are real life superheroes.’
