SACRAMENTO, Calif .– The state of California on Thursday scheduled a recall election for Sept. 14 that threatens to oust Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom from office, as a result of a political uprising fueled by widespread distress over the coronavirus orders they shut down. schools and businesses.
The election in the nation’s most populous state will be a marquee contest with national implications, watched closely as a barometer of the public mood heading toward the 2022 election, when a tightly divided Congress will be back in play.
The date was set by Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis after election officials certified that enough valid petition signatures had been submitted to qualify the election for the ballot.
