US elections 2024: forecasts and polls. Who is favored? Here’s how to interpret the numbers
In most American states, citizens have the option to vote in advance than Election Day: You can do this in person, at special seatsor “in absence”, through the post or by depositing your card in a “ballot box”, boxes for collecting votes positioned in strategic points of the cities.
For the US elections, to decide the winner of the race for the White House it’s not the popular votema he college vote.
Il popular vote is the total of votes cast by citizens Americans: Every voter votes for one candidate for president and one candidate for vice president. However, this vote will not determine who goes to the White House. This is done to prevent more populous states, such as California, from having a greater weight than those with fewer inhabitants.
To rebalance the weight of the individual states, the American electoral system provides for the vcollege note: the USA is divided into fifty states and each has a certain number of Big Votersbased on his representation in Congressi.e. number of senators plus the number of representatives in the House.
In total there are 538 Major Voters: the figure obtained by adding i 435 representatives of Camerai 100 of the Senate hey three representing the capitalWashington DC. When voters vote, they are actually choosing the Electors, who are obliged to vote for the candidate who won the popular vote in the state of which they represent.
The candidate who receives at least 270 votes of the Great Voters wins the elections.
A few days before the vote, a small group remains States still in the balancewhere the campaigns of the two candidates are concentrating their efforts on convincing the undecided and those who are unlikely to vote.
The seven “swing states” are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Together, they bring a lot to the table 93 Major Voters: neither Trump nor Harris have to win them all to become president, but if one of them doesn’t win neither of them has mathematically lost.
