Data Uotan confirms the possibility of coexistence between classical and digital art

The opening of the Data Uotan Festival was above all a confirmation that classical and modern currents in the artistic horizons can coexist, under the premise of Kandinsky, who establishes the absence of norms in art under the power of freedom.

This was demonstrated by the performance Somnia and the exhibition Tlal-tech-uhtli, where dance, painting and sculpture coexisted with digital techniques enhanced by the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

In the center of the Noesunagaleria workshop (Dr. Vértiz 86, colonia Doctores), which resists the siege of gentrification, one piece stood out among the lights and sound and visual artifacts: the reproduction of a famous photo derived from the Acteal massacre, which occurred in 1997, in which Tsotsil indigenous people were massacred by the Army.

The symbolic placement of the piece was a statement of intent. As confirmed to The Day the owner of the space, Ricardo Santos: Both the exhibition and the gallery are a way of rebelling against the current principles of the art market that constantly violate artists.. Therefore, all the pieces on display are for sale, and the total amount of the transaction goes into the artist’s pocket.

To the side, a giant circular canvas with two crocodiles seemed to come to life thanks to the use of the digital projection technique known as mapping, which was activated by a proximity sensor. Omar Valdivida, the architect in charge of this work, explained that to carry out these interventions there is a gigantic analysis of data in which AI plays a fundamental role.

Criticism of the mix of digital and classical art is common. It is thought that there is no merit behind a work done on a computer, but in reality the process of artistic creation using a computer is just as demanding.

An example of this was the performance Somnia, by dancer Alejandra Metz and artist Jaco Schilp. The piece was created based on the medical and dream study of dreams in Utrecht, Netherlands, within the former psychiatric prison Pieter Baan Centrum, now a space for artistic creation.

Featuring music crafted in collaboration with Ben Spaander aka Cosmic Force, and Noah Zurhaar, who reflected a strong influence from the atmosphere produced by the pioneer of the genre, Brian Eno, the demonstration was the synthesis of the festival’s intentions.

Movements inspired by the best of classical dance, accompanied by projections on a canvas that, through a third-dimensional sensor, generated synchronized visuals, with the dancer’s postures that developed a visual metaphor of what it means to sleep and dream, in an immersive and enveloping environment.

This combination of techniques and its iconoclastic proposal made the Data Uotan festival win the Open Call 2024 support from among more than 60 projects, which is awarded each year by the Dutch embassy in Mexico to artistic projects, as stated by Ambassador Wilfred Mohr, who in his speech highlighted the collaboration between Mexican and Dutch artists in the project.

The exhibition will remain open until tomorrow from 6 to 12 pm. Tickets will cost 280 pesos and can be purchased at: https://shorturl.at/ZGV6d.
