Data of more than half a billion Facebook users reportedly put online | NOW

The personal details of about 533 million Facebook users would have been put online on Saturday, the news agency writes Bloomberg. The data includes phone numbers, full names, location information, email addresses, dates of birth and other information.

A spokesperson for Facebook states in a response to the news agency that the data has already been stolen in 2019. The problem is said to have been resolved by August of that year.

According to Business Insider there is data on the streets of Facebook users from 106 countries. At least 32 million US users, 11 million British and 6 million Indians have been affected by the old leak. The medium claims to have viewed the data and claims to have verified leaked personal data.

RTL tech journalist Daniël Verlaan states that the data of 5.6 million Dutch Facebook users have been placed online. Facebook was not available for comment on Saturday evening.

Founder Alon Gal of the cyber security firm Hudson Rock discovered that the stolen data had been posted online. According to Gal, a hacker already tried to sell the data in January, but now seems to have placed the data online for free, so that anyone can download it.

The cybercrime specialist warns that malicious parties can start working with the data. Gal points to possible phishing attacks and identity fraud.
