Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics: The Highest Early Marriage Rate in South Kalimantan in Indonesia

Liputan6.com, Jakarta Early-age marriage still occurs in several regions in Indonesia. Deputy Minister of PPPA for Child Development Lenny N. Rosalin, SE, MSc, Mfin, conveyed data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) regarding the proportion of women aged 20-24 who were married before the age of 18 according to provinces in 2019.

BPS data shows South Kalimantan to be the province with the highest number of married women before the age of 18 in Indonesia, namely 21.2 percent. Followed by Central Kalimantan 20.2 percent.

From high to low, West Sulawesi ranks third early-age marriage with 19.2 percent, West Kalimantan 17.9 percent, Southeast Sulawesi 16.6 percent, Central Sulawesi 16.3 percent.

West Nusa Tenggara 16.1 percent, Bangka Belitung 15.5 percent, Jambi 14.8 percent, North Maluku 14.4 percent, North Sulawesi 13.5 percent, South Sumatra 13.5 percent, Bengkulu 13.2 percent, West Papua 13.2 percent.

Furthermore, Gorontalo reported 13.2 percent, North Kalimantan 12.9 percent, East Kalimantan 12.4 percent, West Java 12.3 percent, South Sulawesi 12.1 percent, Lampung 12.1 percent, Papua 11.2 percent, and East Java 11.1 percent early-age marriage.

“There are 22 provinces whose figures are above the national figure. This means that 1 in 9 children get married before the age of 18. This means that children marry at the age of children, have children at child age, children have children who are still children,” said Lenny in the PPPA Ministry webinar, Tuesday ( 8/9/2020).
