Data from 4.5 million passengers stolen from Air India

Hackers have managed to get hold of the personal data of no less than 4.5 million Air India passengers. The Indian airline confirmed this on Friday. This includes the names, bank card numbers and passport details of the victims.

Air India says it is in the process of securing the affected servers, and is calling on experts in cybersecurity. The banks concerned were also contacted. “We deeply regret the problems and are happy with the support and trust of our passengers,” the airline continues to insist.

Other airlines are also victims

Air India is by no means the first airline to fall victim to hackers in recent years. British Airways had to pay a fine of 23 million euros last year after the data of 400,000 passengers was hacked in a cyber attack in 2018.

The Asian Cathay Pacific had to pay a fine of 575,000 euros after the data of 9 million passengers fell into the wrong hands in 2018. Last year, 9 million customer data was also stolen from the low-cost carrier EasyJet.
