Data breach with data 65,000 civil servants at the Ministry of Justice

According to Grapperhaus, the fault lies with an external employee who performed quality checks on access services at the ministry, such as the Rijkspas that allows employees to enter and exit the building.

Own work environment

He copied software against the rules to a ‘private work environment’ and then to two other government departments he worked for. The associated data was also copied.

The data breach came to light on 30 June when the GGD GHOR found the copied data during a routine check on its own network. Subsequently, the same data was also found at the Public Prosecution Service.

This concerns personal data such as name, organization, type of employment, passport number, e-mail address, place and date of birth, gender and nationality. No private addresses, phone numbers or passwords were leaked.

It doesn’t look like the data is out there. “At the moment I have no indication that this data has been viewed or used by unauthorized persons,” Grapperhaus writes to the House of Representatives. An investigation is underway to clarify this. The leaked data has since been deleted or rendered useless. The persons involved in the data breach will be informed about this.
