Data as a Location Factor: How Austria Can Become a Digital Frontrunner

Author: Mag. Stefan Santer, head of the public affairs working group at iab Austria and privacy expert and country manager at Didomi

The digital communications industry plays a central role for Austria’s location and competitiveness in global markets. As the embodiment of digital transformation, it is a dynamic and highly innovative sector characterized by constant development and adaptation. Artificial intelligence (AI) with ChatGPT & Co. is currently establishing itself as the latest topic and potential future opportunity.

Data is at the heart of the industry and has enormous economic benefits if used correctly. ChatGPT and Co. don’t work without data either. The companies – an ecosystem of publishers, marketers, online advertisers – play an important role in the effective use and processing of data in order to offer users personalized and relevant content and services.

In order to leverage the important potential of this data ecosystem and strengthen Austria as a location on its journey to becoming a “digital frontrunner”, first-class and future-oriented framework conditions are required. How come?

Austrian companies 50% below the EU average in big data use

We are sitting on enormous amounts of data, most of which remains unused. The potential of AI and big data is currently not being fully exploited, especially not in Austria. Only six percent of all Austrian companies use big data – European leaders such as the Netherlands or Belgium have three times as high values. The benefits of industrial data in particular are recognized in the Netherlands, but mostly not yet in Austria.

Only every second company assesses location conditions for digitalization positively

We see that Austrian companies are increasingly pointing out the adverse local conditions for digitalization. Data is one of the most important resources of our time. But the advantage for users can only be fully realized when they are made usable. Austria needs to get into the fast lane when it comes to using data ecosystems in order to get to the top and shift the associated added value to Austria.

We have to take action!

We see a great need for action here in order not to be left behind. We want to use the Digital Fairness Dialogue on November 20, 2023 under the title “Data as a location factor – How does Austria become a digital frontrunner?” to discuss together the future of Austria as a digitalization location and a national data strategy and to work on concrete, forward-looking solutions.
