As Duo Dérangé, Kristof Gundelfinger and Daniel Brouns arrange from pop songs to aria songs in the style of French chansons – always with a good dash of irony.
It is thanks to a well-known French spirits manufacturer that this duo came together. In the short term, guitarist Kristof Gundelfinger was supposed to bring a chanson program to the stage for said client. He quickly found an ally in the singer and native Dutchman Daniel Brouns. With their Duo Dérangé, the two do not just want to imitate the classic chanson. They rather bring a respectful parody and send everything from pop songs to arias through the chanson filter.
“The real chanson – Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel – these are always really grand gestures,” says Kristof Gundelfinger. “That is a bit contrary to the guitar and vocals line-up, which is very small. I find it very appealing that you have to replace the very big gesture with a wink. This gives the interpretation a slightly ironic touch that I really like find sexy. “
The irony also resonates in the band name. Dérangé – that means something like “messed up”. However, it is important for the two musicians to handle the chansons carefully and lovingly. Daniel Brouns knows how many memories are connected with this genre, that making chansons is almost sacred: “There is still real Bordeaux, real Camembert too. There is still enough France. What we add is partly a memory for Part of an attempt to somehow keep it alive. But also with the elements from the times that have passed since then. “
Wrapped up in a slightly theatrical stage show with an exhilarating dramaturgy, the two want to spread a certain lightness with their performances – the French “savoir vivre”. From that point of view, it wasn’t a bad thing that the French spirits manufacturer canceled the concert at short notice at the end. Since the program was written once, Dérangé has been regularly performing this homage to the chanson on stages in northern Germany for four years now.
