Gerwyn Price is darts world champion for the first time and has thus also made it to the top of the world rankings.
The former rugby player won his first World Cup final against Scots Gary Anderson (50) 7-3 on Sunday evening at Alexandra Palace in London, crowning a strong season with the favorites. The veteran Anderson, world champion in 2015 and 2016, was only able to keep up in his fifth World Cup final in the closing stages.
Price needs 12 match darts
Price pocketed £ 500,000 and the 25 kg Sid Waddell Trophy with his 12th match dart, completing his remarkable assault on the darts throne that began just six years ago. By 2013 he had been working towards a career as a rugby professional.
Now, with his victory in the empty “Ally Pally”, the “Iceman” also ousted long-time dominator Michael van Gerwen from the top of the darts world rankings. The Dutchman had held this position since January 2014.

Anderson overslept the first few sentences
Anderson completely overslept the first sentences on Sunday, but had already exceeded expectations with his participation in the final. The 50-year-old rarely achieved his top form in the past year, and in the run-up to the World Cup, he was also plagued by severe knee problems.
Anderson then improved from game to game, in the semifinals he won 6: 3 against Dave Chisnall, who had caused the biggest sensation of the tournament with his 5-0 win over van Gerwen in the quarter-finals. As the loser in the final, Anderson now received prize money of £ 200,000.
