Darts Pro Martin Schindler’s Emotional Roller Coaster at World Cup Round of 16

Darts professional Martin Schindler missed the World Cup round of 16 after an emotional roller coaster ride. The native of Strausberg (Märkisch-Oderland) lost in the third round of the World Championship against the Englishman Scott Williams 3:4 in sets after a real thriller – and thus did not make it to the final round at London’s Alexandra Palace, becoming the second German ever to do so 16 to move in.

First, Schindler built on his convincing second-round appearance against the Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena (3:1) against Williams and won the first two sets. Numerous German fans – including national players and ex-Union Berlin professional Nico Schlotterbeck – celebrated him with shouts of “Martin Schindler Ole”.

But then the 27-year-old lost the thread with five lost legs in a row. After Williams equalized the set and an interruption, Schindler briefly played as if transformed, checking a 161 via the bull’s eye and taking a 3-2 lead in sets.

Williams repeatedly tried to win over the audience with loud gestures of celebration and always found an answer. The decision for Williams came in the decisive seventh set and in overtime – even after legs it was a draw. In the end one of the players has to win by two legs. Williams succeeded in doing so, concentrating on making it 4-2 in the deciding set when Schindler’s nerves gave out at the end.

World Cup debutant Ricardo Pietreczko could do better on Thursday: The Berlin native will then play his third round match against top favorite Luke Humphries.
