Sutter was the head coach of the Flames from 2002 to 2006. He was their general manager from 2003 to 2010.
The 62-year-old Albertan was behind the bench when the Flames reached the Stanley Cup final in 2004. Tampa Bay had triumphed in seven games by then.
Sutter led the Los Angeles Kings from 2011 to 2017. He held the Stanley Cups from 2012 and 2014.
He has 18 seasons as a head coach in the NHL. His route also led him to lead the San José Sharks and the Chicago Blackhawks.
Virtanen rings the charge
Jake Virtanen had two goals and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1.
Bo Horvat collected a 10th net and Thatcher Demko made 32 saves. Only Pierre Engvall defeated him.
Michael Hutchinson stopped 24 pucks for the Maple Leafs.
Toronto had won four in a row, with a 15-2 advantage in goals.
Elias Pettersson was missing for the Canucks. The club’s third pointer left early morning training with an upper-body injury. His condition will be assessed on a daily basis.
