Darren England and Dan Cook, referees who were in charge of the VAR and assistant respectively in the match between Tottenham and Liverpool last Saturday, have been punished without assignment for matchday 8 of the Premier League. This Tuesday, the referees scheduled for each weekend match were announced and both judges were relegated from their matches.
England and Cook were the ones involved in ‘human error’, as cited by the Professional Match Officials Body (PGMOL), which directly affected the score of the match. According to the explanation presented, England would have thought that the goal by Luis Díaz, who was in the correct position, was considered good on the field of play. However, the number 2 assistant, Adrian Holmes, raised the flag pointing out of place and the VAR had to have intervened to rule it as valid.
On the same matchday 7, Darren England was scheduled to be the fourth official in last Sunday’s match between Nottingham Forest and Brentford, but was replaced at the last minute. Additionally, England was scheduled for the ‘Championship’ match between Leicester City and Preston North End, but he was also relegated. Dan Cook was going to be an assistant in Monday’s match between Fulham and Chelsea, but he was also dropped.
VAR cockpit audio will be released!
After what happened, Liverpool began its fight to go to the end in search of clarifying the facts and formally requested recordings of the communication between the referees at the time of the error. The official body for professional matches has agreed to share the recordings with the team and they will even eventually be made public so that everyone can know what happened during the controversial play.
The audio of the conversations between the match officials involved in the VAR controversy during Liverpool’s defeat at Tottenham will be released.
