The Darmstadt magistrate wants to change the allocation guidelines for applicants. Investors should continue to receive grants for the creation of subsidized housing.
Too many people apply for social housing in Darmstadt, while the number of subsidized apartments does not grow. There is currently a lack of 2558 social housing, as the city announced at the request of the FR. This is how many households applying for low and medium incomes are registered with the Housing Office on November 1st. According to housing director Barbara Akdeniz (Greens), there are only 5460 social housing in Darmstadt.

Now the city wants to change the allocation guidelines for subsidized housing in accordance with Hessian legislation. This should no longer have to be assigned to a single target group, such as single parents. For the first time, the number of square meters is also given for the highest of the three urgency levels according to which apartments are allocated. The requirement limit for singles is nine square meters, for couples it is 18. Applicants who have to leave their shared apartment after a separation will also be seen as particularly urgent in future. “The change is intended to provide improved clarity in the three existing levels of urgency,” said Akdeniz. Every personally stressful housing situation counts and should be checked.
In order to create more living space, the city wants to extend its guideline for the promotion of social rental housing construction by two years until December 31, 2022. Investors should continue to receive a subsidy, graduated according to the size of the apartment. Projects in ecological construction should be given preference. The city council still has to agree to this.
In a third municipal decision, the city grants the Nassauische Heimstätte a 4.55 million euros grant for the construction of 105 social housing in the Lincoln estate.
