Darmstadt: “Maintaining peace in our city”

Traditionally, the Darmstadt religious communities meet on May 8 for public commemoration. Everything is different this year.

Today, Friday, May 8th, under normal circumstances, it would be time for the Darmstadt religious communities to commemorate the end of the Second World War. This year this is not possible due to the corona pandemic.

A communication from the religious communities said that they wanted to continue doing everything “to maintain peace in our city and to promote peace in the world”. Getting to know each other and talking to each other are essential for this. This year, the topic “Peace needs the common good” was planned for the event – it should be about conditions for the common good and which initiatives are beneficial for it.

Members of the working group include the Bahá’í community in Darmstadt, the Emir Sultan Mosque, the Catholic and Protestant deaneries, the Greek Orthodox and the Jewish community.

Meanwhile, the German Trade Union Confederation calls for decentralized commemoration on May 8th.

DGB: Thank the liberators

“In places that commemorate the victims of fascism and resistance fighters, signs and posters should thank the liberators,” says a message.

If you want, you can, for example, put red carnations or bouquets of flowers on street signs and share the actions via social media such as Facebook and Instagram.
