In the ADFC bicycle climate test, Darmstadt is doing a little better than 2018.

In the nationwide bicycle climate test of the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC), Darmstadt improved slightly by 0.14 grade points compared to the 2018 rating. This is announced by the ADFC. Darmstadt thus achieved an overall grade of 3.7 and, in comparison to cities of a similar size, at least 7th out of a total of 41 places. In 2018, the city was still in 9th place. Lord Mayor and Head of Transport Jochen Partsch (Greens) sees the city on the right track, but also says that he is not satisfied with the result. “We will continue to expand the cycle path network and further increase the cycling friendliness of Darmstadt so that we can achieve a significantly better result in the next evaluation in two years”, Partsch wrote in a press release.

Conflicts with pedestrians

Among other things, with the cycling strategy adopted in 2019, the city created the framework conditions. Every two years, with the support of the Federal Ministry of Transport, the ADFC asks the population how bicycle-friendly they think the city is. In Darmstadt, 980 people currently took part in the detailed online survey. As Darmstadt’s strengths, the participants rated, among other things, the recent promotion of bicycles and the possibility of taking bicycles with you in local public transport.

Many are annoyed by bicycle theft and conflicts with drivers and pedestrians. Many of the respondents also consider illegal parking controls on cycle paths to be insufficient; the feeling of security was rated 4.1. jon
