The economic survey conducted by the Darmstadt Chamber of Commerce and Industry is all about the Corona crisis. But some entrepreneurs do not see the situation as so bleak for the future.

The Corona crisis has caused companies in South Hesse to be “in a state of emergency”. But the entrepreneurs still seem to be optimistic about the future. Matthias Martiné, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) Darmstadt, said at the presentation of the current economic report that despite some negative feedback “some results gave hope”. Because just under half of the entrepreneurs see cause for complaint, less than feared. That means “that at least some of the respondents are not so bleak and the economic flame is still burning,” said Martiné.

315 companies in the chamber district took part in the survey, which was carried out from mid-April to mid-May. Almost all companies judge the current situation to be significantly worse than for the financial and economic crisis of 2008 and 2009. According to IHK managing director Uwe Vetterlein, the South Hessian economy is in a “profound recession, overcoming which requires a huge effort”.

Only ten percent of companies believe in better business in the future, 58 percent expect deterioration. Only ten percent of entrepreneurs want to invest more. More than half are planning cuts. And more than a third of the entrepreneurs surveyed want to part with staff.
