Darmstadt: Great rush for art in the forest

Because of the corona pandemic, more people are drawn to the International Forest Art Trail in Darmstadt’s forest district. The new annual program of the association offers many art events in nature.

Most art and cultural institutions recorded fewer visitors last year due to the corona pandemic. Not so at the International Forest Art Center (IWZ) in Darmstadt. According to curator Ute Ritschel, the number of guests even increased by an estimated 20,000 to 150,000 per year. “People came in every season and even asked for a map in December,” said Ritschel on Tuesday at the presentation of the new annual program in Darmstadt. She has never seen anything like it, says Ritschel.

Also this year the team from the Association for International Forest Art presents a colorful program with offers all about the Darmstadt Forest. The highlight will be the Global Nomadic Art Project, or GNAP for short. It is taking place for the third time. In a two-week workshop, two dozen artists from Germany and all over the world will be taken to various places in the region – such as the Messel Pit, the Felsenmeer, Oberfeld or Lichtenberg Castle – where they can have a look and be guided by experts from Geo-nature parks Get information on the geology and history of the place. Inspired by the experience with all the senses, they create works of art there within a few hours. These objects “are fleeting”, says Jutta Weber, managing director of the Geo-Naturpark Bergstrasse-Odenwald, which is a partner of the forest art center. “Sometimes they last for hours, days or weeks,” says Weber. However, they will be photographed and shown in an exhibition from September 11th at the Waldkunstzentrum or published in a catalog.

The Union für Internationale Waldkunst organizes the International Forest Art Trail over 3.3 kilometers through the Darmstadt forest district from Böllenfalltor to Ludwigshöhe every two years. The works of art are freely accessible.

For the first time, there will be a children’s camp this year, where the little ones will be introduced to the GNAP method. “It’s an experiment,” says Ritschel. Children could learn to see the forest differently. Another major project is the construction of a buoy. It is intended to complement the submarine by the artist Roger Rigorth, which children love as a climbing object. He wants to design the seating as a bench art project. So far there are 18 such works of art to sit and relax in the region. Cooperation partners are the Geo-Naturpark and Hessenforst. Donations are still required for this.

As every year, there will also be a broad supporting program in 2021 with guided tours, a flea market, cultural and culinary forest art picnics, an art meeting point – this time with the expressive artist Ruth Geiersberger – and the pram with free workshops by forest art educators, artists and Geopark Ranger: inside.

After Easter, the season begins with the first of four guided tours along the forest art trail on April 18 from 3 to 5 p.m.
