DARMSTADT – “Kita-Radio”, video messages, painted stones: In order not to completely lose contact with the children during the Corona period, daycare centers are currently becoming creative. Because the facilities are still closed for regular operation. Only emergency care for children whose parents work in systemically relevant professions or are single parents is offered. That could change in the foreseeable future. A few days ago, the family ministers from the federal and state governments spoke in favor of a gradual return to childcare. However, no specific date for this has been given.

In Darmstadt daycare centers and their providers, there is generally great approval for the advance. Although there are various hurdles to be overcome when returning to normal, for example in the case of group sizes, the deployment of staff or the spatial conditions. Because it is also clear that it is utopian to be able to comply with the distance rules of at least 1.5 meters among children and their educators.

Laura Erzgräber, director of the children’s home on the vicarage in Wixhausen, is convinced that it would be good for the children to go back to daycare. The contact to peers is very important, especially since the parents are now also at the limit. Marie Bernhard, director of the children’s center in the middle of the Martinsviertel, shares this opinion. Both see a problem in the spatial situation, because their houses have to cope with a manageable amount of space. “Contact is a huge issue,” says Bernhard.

NO FEES

The city council of Darmstadt has decided that Day care fees and cost contributions urban daycare and day care to suspend furtherThe background is that childcare is still only available to parents who are entitled to emergency care.

City councilor Barbara Akdeniz recommends the free and church sponsors from day care centers to orient themselves on the decision of the magistrate and the parents also exempt from charges

This also concerns the carriers of the Darmstadt daycare centers. Barbara Akdeniz (Greens), who is responsible for the city’s institutions as Social Affairs, emphasizes that solutions must be found that are an option for everyone. Educators need to feel adequately protected at work, parents are relieved, and children from socially disadvantaged families in particular need to be supported in their development – and all this without increasing the risk of infection if possible.

Gradual return to normal operation

The children are now at home for seven weeks. Michael Müller-Möscheid, managing director of the Evangelical Deanery Darmstadt-Stadt, criticized that the needs of the little ones were neglected in the public debate during this time. It is all the more important that a gradual return to normal operation is now being discussed. However, he is also aware that it will be difficult for many institutions to separate the groups geographically as the number of children increases. The trade-off between the well-being of children and the increasing risk of infection is “a tightrope walk that presents us with special challenges”.

Awo managing director Barbara Lücke has a similar view and at the same time demands that the group size of five children should be adjusted should the number of children to be cared for increase. Otherwise the capacity limit of the facilities will be reached quickly.

The federal and state governments decide how and when the gradual return to normal operation of the daycare centers will be carried out. Until that happens, the little ones and their parents have to wait, listen to “Kita-Radio”, keep in touch via video chat and paint stones.
