In Darmstadt, Germany’s first urban data platform with applications on traffic, the environment and garbage went online. Citizens’ ideas are in demand.
The highest particulate matter pollution in Darmstadt can be measured at 9 a.m., the highest ozone content at 4 p.m. In the afternoon, most commuters also drive out of town, namely 6,889 vehicles between 3 and 4 p.m. This and other data about the city and events can now be followed in real time on Germany’s first urban data platform. Hesse’s Digital Minister Kristina Sinemus (independent) and Darmstadt’s Lord Mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens) presented the project on Monday.
In order to collect the data, the city is covered with a network of sensors. The information is stored in a Darmstadt data center and in a cloud. Commuter movements, for example, are recorded as inbound and outbound traffic at the twelve largest intersections and put into relation. Induction loops and cameras at the intersections serve as data sources. The contents of 51 municipal rubbish containers are also recorded by sensors that show the filling level of the containers and the composition of the waste.
implementation
Implementation of the data platform was made by a bidding consortium consisting of the municipal IT service company ekom21 – KGRZ Hessen, the [ui!] Urban Software Institute, a software and consulting company for sustainable solutions in the Smart City sector, as well as the Darmstadt data center DARZ, which was commissioned by the Digital City Darmstadt.
The data platform is the basis for processing and displaying a wide variety of information obtained from a wide variety of data sources.
An important role the sensors from the Internet of Things play in Darmstadt. The applications now publicly available for everything to do with traffic, the environment and waste are the first important applications. The data platform is to be continuously supplemented and expanded with new information in the future. A cooperation with the local universities is planned. In the future, they want to work with a larger circle of local groups, such as companies and associations. cka

“The data platform is an essential step in the development of the Smart City,” said OB Partsch. According to Sinemus, the platform should “become the heart of the digital city” and be a “real model project” as a role model for other municipalities. “The amount of data, the implemented use cases and the multi-tenancy of the platform are unique in this form.” It is important to put the data in relation to one another; this is also to be tested in Darmstadt. Hessen wants to become a leader in digitization and is funding the project with 800,000 euros.

In order to develop future applications, a public participation program was launched via the platform, which runs until March 15. Here you can submit suggestions and evaluate ideas. Everything that is technically feasible and considered sensible should be implemented, announced the managing director of the Digitalstadt-Gesellschaft, José David da Torre Suárez. One suggestion has already been received: to make the available parking spaces visible.
OB Partsch hopes for more transparency about relationships, for example between traffic volumes and events or between Covid 19 infection numbers, vaccinations and vaccine stocks. Darmstadt is already the only city that can show the development of car use since the beginning of the pandemic.
