Darmstadt is one of the top 10 major cities in Germany – especially when it comes to sustainability and economic strength. Frankfurt can also score points in the ranking.

Darmstadt – Darmstadt has a lot to offer. In summer you can take walks in the Botanical Garden of the Technical University of Darmstadt or, of course, boat trips across the Steinbrücker Pond at the Oberwaldhaus. And in the visitor center of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Messel Pit, ancient horses and fossils can be admired at any time of the year.

Darmstadt is at the top in three categories of the city ranking

But it’s not just the cultural offerings of the southern Hesse city that are impressive. According to the city ranking published on Thursday by IW Consult on behalf of, Darmstadt counts Immoscout24 and the Business Week in the categories “Economic Power”, “Dynamism” and “Sustainability” among the top 10 major German cities.

The city ranking is an annual study. The current situation (level) and rates of change (dynamics) of various indicators of 71 independent cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants are compared. Factors analyzed include “economic structure,” “labor market,” “real estate,” and “quality of life.”

Darmstadt ranks first in the education category for MINT graduates

Darmstadt’s victory when it comes to “education” is not surprising. Darmstadt takes first place when it comes to MINT university graduates. The trend is increasing from year to year. This also applies to the “Economy” category, in which Darmstadt rose from 8th to 7th place compared to the previous year. By the way, Frankfurt took eighth place in this category this year.

The Main metropolis can also score points in this year’s city ranking. In the “Level” category, Frankfurt takes 8th place. The level ranking looks at the economic and social situation of a major German city and compares it with other cities. First place in this category goes to Munich again.

How other major cities in Hesse performed in the city rankings

Compared to the previous year, the Business Week found in their study that Darmstadt is also slowly but steadily working its way up in another category. In the “Sustainability” category, Darmstadt moved from 8th place to 7th place. Quite the opposite to Frankfurt, which had a particularly difficult time in the “Sustainability” category. The Main metropolis only comes in 42nd out of 71. Things went better in the “Dynamics” category. Frankfurt is in 13th place there.

Darmstadt ranks 7th in the “Level” category and 8th in “Dynamics”. The state capital Wiesbaden comes in 19th place in the level ranking, while the scores for dynamism (42) and sustainability (43) were significantly weaker. Kassel and Offenbach performed worse in all three areas in the evaluation.

The biotech location Mainz was once again at the top nationwide in terms of “dynamics”. The Rhineland-Palatinate state capital once again benefited from increased tax revenue due to the success of the corona vaccine manufacturer Biontech and is thus also stalking the front runner Munich.
