Traveling in the Rhône, Gérald Darmanin announced on Friday March 19 the deployment of nine additional police officers who will join the Givors-Grigny police station in the face of urban violence in the metropolis of Lyon, indicates BFM TV.
“There will be nine additional police officers this year, including four who will come directly from the police academy,” he said.
This decision was taken as part of the plan announced in October 2020 by the Minister of the Interior providing for the reinforcement of 300 police officers in the metropolis of Lyon over three years.
“The hundred police officers deployed over the year that I had mentioned with the mayor of Lyon concern the police district of the metropolis of Lyon”, recalled the minister before adding: “I trust the prefect to put the resources where needed. ”
Urban violence in the metropolis of Lyon
The metropolis of Lyon has been facing repetitive urban violence since Thursday evening March 4, in several sensitive neighborhoods such as La Duchère, Rillieux-la-Pape and Bron.
Groups attack police teams with projectiles and mortar fire. The facts take place in the early evening, in fairly short sequences, of about an hour. The authorities associate these acts of violence with the innovative action plan, carried out jointly between the municipalities and the State services since July 2020, against trafficking and incivility, indicates Le Monde.
Faced with these attacks, the prefect received reinforcement from 200 police and gendarmes. The police strategy consists in increasing the number of mobile patrols, in order to intervene massively, as quickly as possible, on a scene of violence, in order to avoid the spread of clashes, adds the newspaper.
Violence in other municipalities
The metropolis of Lyon is not, however, the only one to welcome reinforcements from the police in the face of urban violence. Thus, Gérald Darmanin decided on March 19 to deploy 22 additional police officers in the city of Douai, including 10 from May.

“These police officers will be placed in the field as a priority, in contact with the population and will enable more operations to be carried out, in particular against drug trafficking,” he said.

According to Gérald Darmanin, this approach by the ministry targets drug trafficking which is at the origin of this violence.
