Darkness is here – soon you can start photographing the northern lights again

The afternoon sun and summer are still reminded. Most recently, it was swimming in glorious sun and sea. It all feels a bit strange but actually the astronomical night is near. Darkness sweeps in like a feather from the south-southeast and already on August 8th it is astronomical night in the very southern parts of the country.

Astronomical night actually means one thing. Darkness. The sun is below 18° below the horizon, enough to have no chance of affecting the night sky. But, already around August 1, it is possible to photograph the Milky Way from the latitudes of Gotland, Gothenburg and Jönköping.

So it doesn’t have to be “pitch black”, as images of distant nebulae in my feed show. Northern lights and starry skies are visible long before astronomical night. If we’re going to be specific, it’s still the astronomical darkness we’re talking about in this article, and it reaches Stockholm around August 20. Umeå has to wait until the turn of the month August – September and just over two weeks later, darkness has reached all the way up in the north.

So: high time to start tagging. Norrskensverige has kickoff on August 1. Are you joining the hunt? For those who want that little extra, there is also Norrsken Plus with articles useful for food in both photography and northern lights. Surf in and check.

Right now you can read, among other things the first part in our school about apps for you who are aurora enthusiasts.

Maybe you want to subscribe and get access not only to Norrsken Plus, but also to the entire range at Kamera & Bild? Thank you, in that case, then you support Northern Lights Sweden, our observations and updates about the Northern Lights situation.
