The creators of the Dark Souls Nightfall mod, FromSoftware’s amateur sequel, have released a new video in which they talk about the progress and status of the project, showing the gameplay in the background.
The trailer explains that Nightfall will use some of Lordran’s environment assets, visible from afar in Dark Souls but not accessible, that have now been completed and are available for exploration. Also, the modders chose not to add entirely new areas, with the exception of a small brand new map in the last area, but still tried to emulate the original work by making all the locations interconnected.
There will also be new bosses, described as “rematches against old Dark Souls foes with new speed modifiers” and new spells, although the modder explained that the approach to the last point was conservative: the new spells would be fun to use, but not as strong and unbalanced to outdo the gun approach. The game will also feature new NPCs with voice acting, a real-time lighting system with day/night cycles, and brand new cutscenes.
For the uninitiated, Nightfall is an unofficial direct sequel to the first Dark Souls. The game continues from the dark ending of FromSoftware, and will take place in the warped dimension of Lordran. This is a very ambitious project that features the most influential modders in the community and aims to offer a completely new experience both in terms of gameplay and content. At the moment, the mod does not yet have an exact release date.
