This tourist, who was not identified, was astonished. Just wanted to open the fridge containing the mini bar in the hotel room alone, he was threatened with a fine of IDR 750 thousand.
Most travelers already know that mini bars in hotel rooms are very expensive. Some people are even lucky enough to find rooms that already provide free drinking water for their guests.
Most of the snacks, drinks and alcoholic beverages in the mini bar fridge are priced way above the market price. The price is generally stated in the price list that is already available.
Therefore, most people prefer to buy spare drinks outside the hotel and store them in the fridge to keep them cold for their stay.
Apparently, keeping their own drinking water or snacks in the refrigerator was out of the question for guests at the hotel. Via uploads on the Reddit forum, the tourist shared a notice stuck to the mini bar door.
“There is a sensor in the minibar fridge. Use of the mini bar fridge for personal storage is automatically charged at US$50 (or around Rp.759 thousand),” the statement read, quoted by the Daily Star, Monday (23/1/2023).
A telephone number is also available if hotel guests wish to make special requests to use the fridge. “To be honest I was too scared to open the fridge. I didn’t want to risk the cost or have to argue with it,” the user wrote.
Several people wrote in comments assuring him that the phone number was most likely they could request another way of cooling the food that would be provided.
“This is not a fridge. This is a mini bar. You can request a real fridge from the number provided,” wrote one user.
Then, another user suggested that the tourist could be loaned another fridge by the hotel. However, not a few are horrified by these extreme measures.
“This is the thing that makes me mad about capitalism. If they could they would charge us to walk and breathe,” wrote another user.
