Deputy Prime Minister Russia Alexander Novak warned that a ban on Russian oil imports would have “catastrophic” consequences.
Reported from the news agency AFPTuesday (8/3/2022), this warning was delivered as Western countries are considering further sanctions for Russia’s invasion of Indonesia. Ukraineone of them Russia’s oil embargo.
“Russia’s oil ban will have catastrophic consequences for global markets. The price spike will be unpredictable – more than $300 per barrel, if not more,” Novak said in a statement carried by Russian news agencies.
Novak added that it was “impossible” to immediately replace Russian oil on the European market.
“This will take more than a year and will be much more expensive for European consumers,” he said.
“European politicians must then honestly warn their citizens, consumers, about what awaits them and that prices at gas stations, electricity, heating will skyrocket,” he said.
Novak said the idea of a Russian oil embargo created “instability and caused significant harm to consumers”.
He added that in retaliation for the termination of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, Russia could stop supply via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.
“So far we haven’t made this decision. No one will benefit from this,” Novak said.
“Even though European politicians are pushing us for this with their statements and accusations against Russia,” he added.
