Daphne Caruana Galizia: Chris Cardona is said to have paid 350,000 euros to the alleged murderer

In the case of the journalist murdered in Malta Daphne Caruana Galizia a former minister is said to have paid a killer 350,000 euros. Melvin Theuma, who describes himself as the middleman of the murder, testified in court on Monday. The witness is said to have been promised pardon for statements.

Theuma said the money was paid by former Secretary of the Economy Chris Cardona. A middleman handed it over from Cardona to one of the perpetrators. Cardona, however, told the newspaper “Times of Malta”, the statement was false. His cell phone number is said to have been stored on a cell phone that was found near the crime scene.

Daphne Caruana Galizia, a blogger who reported on politics and corruption, was blown up in a car bomb in October 2017. Three men are accused of carrying out the attack: Since the end of 2017 Vincent Muscat and the brothers Alfred and George Degiorgio are in custody. The Businessman Yorgen Fenech, who had good contacts with the government at the time, has been accused of pulling the strings since December. The accused reject the allegations.

Against the background of the case, the government was changed and Malta got in early 2020 a new prime minister.
