/ world today news/ Defense Minister Nikolay Nenchev has nominated the former acting interior minister Yordan Bakalov as the head of military intelligence. This was learned by “Now” from sources in the Ministry of Defense.
Nenchev confirmed the information in the show “Face to Face”. Bakalov has not yet been appointed, as his investigation by the National Security Agency for access to classified information is currently underway. This post requires the highest access level.
It will not be necessary to coordinate the appointment with President Rosen Plevneliev, as it will be done by order of Nenchev. The appointment of a civilian head of military intelligence became possible during the first term of the GERB. Then former Minister of Defense Anyu Angelov and President Georgi Parvanov clashed over who should head military intelligence. The head of state blocked Angelov’s proposals, which forced the rulers to find a way around Parvanov. Thus, it was possible for a civilian to be the head of military intelligence. Veselin Ivanov was appointed to this post.
Bakalov will replace Ivanov, who was released from Nenchev, in this position. The reason for the dispute between the two was whether the military intelligence archive should be given to the Dossier Commission. Ivanov claims that everything has been handed over. However, the Chairman of the Dossier Commission, Evtim Kostadinov, claims that only digital media were given, and by law he should also receive the paper originals. Military intelligence does not want to hand over the files to the foreign nationals, although the commission assures that once they receive the documents about them, they will not make them public.
From the words of the independent MP Velizar Enchev last week, it became clear that the National Intelligence Service and Military Information Service have not yet handed over to the Dossier Commission documents about foreign citizens who cooperated with Bulgarian intelligence.
