Our little frog country has the honor to organize the Eurovision Song Contest this year. Also in Germany the Eurovision craze broke loose during the second edition of the so-called Free European Song Contest, an alternative to the Eurovision song contest. Sixteen participants left for Cologne this year, including our own Danny Vera. After an evening full of fireworks, glitter and men with beards, the musician left for the Netherlands again with the second prize in his pocket.
The singer conquered that spot with his hit ‘Roller Coaster’, which brought him 94 points. Remarkable, because Danny is not a fan of the Eurovision song contest at all. “It was explained to me very strangely”, the singer defends his choice on Friday evening at the table at Humberto Tan. “I have a record deal in Germany and he said: we have something really nice, and then they came up with this. I didn’t know the title, but I said: if you say it’s good, I’ll stand there no one problem.”

Two weeks in advance Danny only found out that it was an alternative song festival. “I don’t necessarily have anything against the song contest, but I’m not the person who likes competitions. Firstly, I’m very competitive and secondly, I don’t think music is a competition (…) I would never sign up for anything.”

The alternative was actually intended as a one-off event last year because the real song festival was canceled due to corona. The show was broadcast not only in Germany, but also in Austria and Switzerland. The Spanish-German singer Nico Santos, who participated on behalf of Spain, came first.
The big man behind the initiative is the well-known German presenter and comedian Stefan Raab. He himself participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2000 and for years organized a comparable competition for the sixteen German states, the Bundesvision Song Contest.
