Boston. Boston Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen performed an unprecedented feat in baseball history on Monday by becoming the first player to officially play for two teams in the same game.
The 29-year-old’s unprecedented double-header came about as a result of a strange confluence of events stemming from Boston’s suspended game against the Toronto Blue Jays two months ago.
At the time the June 26 game was suspended due to rain, Jansen was a Toronto player and was in the middle of hitting when the game was postponed.
A month later, on July 27, Jansen was traded to the Red Sox in exchange for three prospects.
That deal cleared the way for Jansen to line up Monday against his former club, Toronto, when the game suspended June 26 resumed at Fenway Park as part of a doubleheader.
Before the game, Jansen said he didn’t realize a place in baseball history awaited him after his trade from Toronto.
“When I got traded, I didn’t really think about it, but I remember they tweeted at me beforehand,” Jansen told MLB.com.
“Everyone keeps saying that history is being made. It’s such a strange thing. I would never have imagined this situation. I guess I would have assumed it would have happened sooner. That’s one of the first thoughts that crossed my mind,” he added.
The Blue Jays defeated the Red Sox 7-3.
